Office Update
September was one of the busiest months on record.  Many new and returning patients came in for spinal adjustments and supportive nutrition.  As you may know, we do not advertise and rely completely on referrals from patients like you.  Thank you, to all those who referred patients to our office.

Last month, I purchased another diathermy unit, as well as a new percussor and adjustor instrument.  I plan to use the equipment for another adjusting room as we are needing the additional availability.  This month I'm going to be handing out a spinal nerve sheet, each and every adjustment, to let you know which vertebra were adjusted and the vital connection to your organs and body parts.

We're looking forward to another busy month, and soon we will be ready to accommodate the growth better with one additional adjusting room.  To make it even easier to refer in your immediate family, we have a new patient special available for you this month.

This month we will see your immediate family members (those living in your household) for the cost of an adjustment only (x-rays -if necessary- and exams will be on us!)  One could save much as $200.00!  We've never done this before, and I expect I will be seeing a lot of new family members.  This one will not come around again any time soon, so refer them in this month.  They will need to bring in a print-out of this newsletter for this special offer.

Can you imagine life without chiropractic?  When you refer your family to a chiropractor, you give them hope to find relief.  It will be my goal to help your family member (or anyone you refer in) so much, that they will go out of their way to thank you.  Let me know when this happens so I know I'm doing my job right.  Let me know if it does not happen too.  Give me some feedback, so I can continually keep doing a better and better job.

The Three T's (The three causes of spinal subluxation)
Patients often ask me what caused their back or neck to go out.  I generally tell them "life does it".  I get some funny looks, but it's a true statement.  There are many causes of spinal subluxation (vertebral misalignment causing nerve irritation), but there is only one correction and that is the spinal adjustment.  Subluxations happen to all of us... as long as we are living.  That's why I get my spine checked very often, because these subluxations come up often and I sure don't want to be subluxated myself.
  • Trauma
This is the most obvious of the three as being a cause of spinal subluxation.  It's easy to understand how someone may misalign a vertebra after an auto accident, falling from a ladder, or slipping off a curb.  Jamming and jarring injuries often cause spinal subluxation.  Lifting heavy objects, exercising too vigorously, repetitive stress like sitting at a computer too long, can also cause misalignment of the vertebra.
  • Toxin
I often use the example of one who drinks too much coffee.  Too much caffeine causes a stress first at the adrenal cortex as the body starts to create more and more neurotransmitters, like epinephrine and norepinephrine, and hormones like cortisol and aldosterone.  A cascade of these neurotransmitters and hormones puts stress on the body.  For example, the liver has to work harder to process the elevated levels of cortisol and aldosterone which in turn may cause viscero-somatic stress (stress that arises from a visceral organ and transfers neurologically to the musculo-skeletal system) at the fifth thoracic vertebra (T5), causing spinal subluxation.  In this case adjusting the T5 will aid the liver in it's ability to function at an optimum level to process the elevated hormone levels.  One may also have viscero-somatic stress arising from the adrenal glands from the over-stimulation, causing subluxation at T9.  In both cases the  spinal adjustment is necessary to correct the subluxation.  Of course one has to consider removing the caffeine as well.  To support the spinal adjustment one may need to repair the stressed visceral organs with proper nutrition
  • Thought
Nervous tension can often cause your shoulders to rise up, your jaw to clench, the low back to spasm, or your stomach to turn upside-down.  The key word here is tension.  Tension causes pulling and tugging at the body, and that can cause vertebral subluxation.  Stress can even cause elevated levels of hormones that may stress organs thereby causing a viscero-somatic reflex as described above.
There are lots of causes of spinal subluxation but only one correction.  The spinal adjustment.

Time and Repetition
New patients with three or more vertebral subluxations in their spine have generally had problems for a long time and are chronically subluxated.  Patients like this need time and repetitive adjustments to heal.  In addition, the more severe the injury is, the more repetitive the adjustments will need to be, and the more time necessary to heal.  As a simple rule of thumb, the more of a problem the patient has, the more time, and more repetitive adjustments, they will need to correct a problem.  New patients can expect to come in for several visits, over as many as four to six weeks, and may need to repeat the adjustment as many as ten to twelve times before the spine becomes stable.

DRESS (The five factors of health)
D - Diet (Make a conscious effort to maintain a healthy diet.  You are what you eat!)
R - Rest (Get adequate sleep.)
E - Exercise (Regular exercise at least three times per week.  Don't over do it either.)
S - Stress (Some stress in life is OK because it can cause growth, but too much can wreak havoc on your body.  Be balanced.)
S - Subluxation (Get checked for subluxation regularly to insure your nervous system is functioning without interference.  Be a bright light bulb.  If you don't know what a bright light bulb is, ask me next time you see me.)

What are you doing today to make an improvement in one or all of these areas of your life?  We're not perfect, so we can not do it all-right, all-the-time.  All we can do, is the best we can.  When you wake up in the morning to get DRESSed ask yourself what you can do.  Maybe if you ask yourself this tomorrow morning you will eat a healthier breakfast, and be able to do a better job at work.  Maybe that will get you noticed, and you may get a raise.  Maybe with that raise you'll be less stressed out, sleep more, and be able to afford for your whole family to come in once a month for a spinal checkup.  Maybe when I correct that chronic low back subluxation, you'll be able to start exercising again because you'll no longer get back spasms when you jog.

Cause and Correction VS' Symptom and Treatment
When you notice something is wrong with your body, what's the first thing you think of?  Do you think "what treatment do I need to get rid of this"?  If you have heartburn after eating, do you think... "Oh I have heartburn, I may need some Tums or the purple pill."?  Most people do think this way, because we have all been conditioned to do so, by all the advertising of drug companies.

If I get heart burn, I'm thinking... "What's causing my heartburn?".  Is it a spinal subluxation in my mid back causing my stomach valve to not close completely, letting gas and acid back up into my esophagus?  Will an adjustment remove spinal nerve irritation and allow the brain to communicate to the stomach, so the valve can close completely?

I'm thinking...  What's the cause of the symptom?  What's the correction of that cause?
Most people are thinking...  What's the name of that symptom?  How do I treat it?

Make sure you are asking the right questions when you notice something is not right with your body.
