New Year's Resolution #1 - Loose Weight:  Another new year is upon us, and with it comes an opportunity to make some improvements in our lives by making those "New Year'Resolutions".  On the top of most people's list is weight loss.  This year I'm preparing for all those questions I'm about to get on weight loss.

Here's a suggestion for you "hard losers".  Try digesting better while you sleep.  Take a liver and gallbladder support supplement, with rubidium and HCL to support fat digestion and sugar handling.  At the same time, take something with valerian, passiflora, and magnesium to relax the body.  The idea is to get the body to rest fully and digest thoroughly during your sleeping hours.  When you wake up in the morning, do not eat a protein-based meal, simple sugars, or simple carbs.  Instead, eat something complex like vegetables, or have some old fashioned rolled oats with raisins for flavor.  By avoiding a protein based breakfast, simple sugars, and simple carbs, you give yourself more time to digest the meal from the day before.  This all helps you make a metabolic shift towards a more efficient metabolism.  I have seen it work for many of my patients.  The supplements I recommend are GB Plus, Hypo-D, RB-Zyme, and Formula 303.  Take 1 each before bedtime.  Contraindicated for anyone with digestive tract ulcers or a history of digestive tract ulcers.

Weight Loss special good through Feb 28th 2006  Purchase these 4 supplements for $50.00  (GP Plus, Hypo D, RB Zyme, and Formula 303 are normally $70.00 for all four).

My Day In Court:  Sooner or later it had to happen.  After 12 years of practice and hundreds of personal injury cases, I ended up on the stand testifying on behalf of an injured patient.  In the past, these things have settled prior to the court date, but not this time.  I was on the stand for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I have always taken care to be very detailed and thorough with my record keeping, and chart notes, and was pleased to see them in action.  This was a case where the patient was referred to many other doctors and specialists, several complex tests were performed, and I arrived at an impairment for this patient.  In short, the file was several hundred pages and very complex.

In the end, I felt the truth was revealed to the jury during my testimony.  I was happy to help in this patient's case and found the experience overall to be satisfying.

Insurance Info:  Nina needs your new address (if you have moved) and your new insurance card  (if you have one).  We continue to bill insurance for those who have it.  We are also looking into other managed care plans as there are a couple that we are not in yet, although we are in most all networks now.

I would like to take this moment to shed a little light on the difficult job Nina has, and what a great job she does for all of you.  Every insurance company is different, and most all our patients have different plans.  I've seen the statements she gets from the insurance companies.  I have no idea how she makes sense of them - but she does, and she does it well.  Next time you see Nina busy at work you may want to cheer her on and give her a nice compliment or "thank you" for her diligence on you behalf.  Kudos to Nina.

Brand New Dojo In Town:  United Studios of SELF DEFENSE (USSD) recently moved into the old Blockbuster space, just down the street from the office.  My son Garrett is the first student to sign up.  After meeting with the instructor Michael Hamm, I can tell it won't be long before this place is busy with men, women and children learning important skills.  Martial Arts builds confidence, physical awareness, and stamina.   For children, physical exercise early-on sets the stage for a healthy life-long habit of exercise.  And, for adults it's never too late to start a healthy exercise habit.

USSD trains their students in the "Shaolin Kempo" style of self defense.  They have over 160 studios nationwide, and this is their first studio in Oregon.  The instructor, Michael Hamm, is offering 2 free weeks of training to patient's, who mention our office, or this e-mail.  This is a great deal - JUST FOR YOU, and I recommend you take advantage of it ASAP.  This is not an offer you will likely see anywhere else.  So go for it!  Do something fun, healthy, and exciting.

Call Michael Hamm at 503-675-2488 to sign up, or get more info.
For more about USSD go to www.ussd.com for general info, or go to www.ussd.net for their online magazine.

The Ancient History of Humor and Health (from "Humor for Your Health")

There is a deep, historical relationship between the two words humor and health. Their interaction is essential for our well-being.
The word humor derives from the Latin word umor, which means fluid or liquid; to be moist. At least as early as 2500 B.C., ancient Greek and Ayurvedic medicines, along with traditional Chinese medicine, linked the body with the cosmos. They believed the Earth's elements were converted during digestion into three body fluids called humors; vatta (wind-breath), pitta (bile) and kapha (phlegm). In 400 B.C., Hippocrates helped refine the Greek idea of there being four humors, and in the 2nd century A.D. the physician Galen wrote extensively on them. It was believed the four humors related to the elements and the seasons, and were qualities of temperament and disposition:

The Body's 4 Humors

sanguine
choleric
melancholic
phlegmatic
blood
yellow bile
black bile
phlegm
(air, spring)
(fire, summer)
(earth, fall)
(water, winter)
optimistic, cheerful
angry, irritable
sad, gloomy
sluggish, indifferent

In almost all individuals, one humor was thought to dominate both personality and health problems. It was the job of medicine to keep one's humors in balance with the treatment of herbs and food. This was carried over during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where patients were diagnosed on the basis of being in good humor or poor humor in relation to their state of health. Medicine started to expand its theory and distance itself from the four humors as a practice in the late 1700s, but the sentiment has carried over into present-day health thinking. If one appears happy, carefree and lighthearted, one is judged to be fine, o.k., doing well and coping well, regardless of any ailment.

Your humor then, flows with your health. It reflects your individual characteristics of joy and happiness expressed in body, mind and soul.

Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates
Three guys died at the same time and ended up in front of Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates.  Saint Peter said to the first guy, "Why should I let you in?" The guy answered, "I was a doctor and I helped many people get well." Saint Peter said, "Okay, you may come in." Saint Peter said to the second guy, "Why should I let you in?" The guy answered, "I was a lawyer and defended many innocent people." Saint Peter said, "Okay, you may come in." Saint Peter then said to the last guy, "And why should I let you in?" The guy answered, "Well, I was a managed health care professional and I helped to keep health care costs down." Saint Peter thought about this a moment and said, "Okay, you may come in, but you can only stay three days!"

Q: What does HMO stand for?

A: This is actually a variation of the phrase, "Hey, Moe!"  Its roots go back to the concept pioneered by Dr. Moe Howard, who discovered that a patient could be made to forget about the pain in his foot if  he was poked hard enough in the eyes.  Modern practice replaces the finger poke with hi-tech equivalents such as voice mail and referral slips, but the result remains the same.

Q: Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?

A: No. Only those you need.

Q: Well, can I get coverage for my pre-existing conditions?

A: Certainly. As long as they don't require any treatment.

Q: What should I do if I get sick while traveling?

A: Try sitting in a different part of the bus.

Q: No, I mean what if I'm away from home and I get sick?

A: You really shouldn't do that.  You'll have a hard time seeing your primary care physician.  It's best to wait until you return, then get sick.

Q: I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle my problem.  Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant right in his office?

A: Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the $10 co-payment, there's no harm in giving him a shot.

Q: My pharmacy only covers generic drugs, but I need the name brand.  I tried the generic medication and it gave me a stomach ache.  What  should I do?

A: Poke yourself in the eyes.

Q: Will health care be any different in the next century?

A: No, but if you call right now, you might get an appointment by then.

Wow!  -  you made it all the way down here.  Hard to believe, I mean this was really long.  Thank you for your readership.  Have a great and healthy day!
